"Without getting too far in front, he's going to get a couple times through the rotation," manager Kevin Cash said before Friday night's game against the Rangers. "He's really progressed impressively. Very determined. He's pretty special in the way he goes about his business."
Around 15 family members, including his parents, will be in attendance.
"I think it's going to be a very exciting day for all of us to kind of see what's he about on the biggest stage," Rays center fielder Kevin Kiermaier said.
Still to be determined is how many at-bats McKay will get.
"I take a lot of pride in it," McKay said of his two-way role. "I've done it for a lot of years. For me, I love being on the field."
Cash said the left-hander will pitch again July 5 when Tampa Bay hosts the American League East-leading New York Yankees. The skipper has not determined if McKay will start or follow an opener.
McKay, taken fourth overall in the 2017 draft, was 3-0 with a 1.08 ERA in five games with Triple-A Durham. Prior to his promotion to Durham, he went 3-0 with a 1.30 ERA, striking out 62 in 41⅔ innings with Double-A Montgomery.
He also has served as a designated hitter. He started his professional career playing first base in addition to pitching, but the Rays took his first baseman's glove away this year in an effort to simplify his focus.
After scuffling at the plate in Double-A, McKay was slashing .265/.400/.551 with four home runs at Triple-A.
"I did explain to him that it's not going to be the routine that he's been on where he's been DHing three or four times in a row," Cash said. "I'd like to see him have at-bats and certainly don't want to shut him down from hitting over the period he's with us."
McKay gives Tampa Bay the option of using four starting pitchers and an opener through a rotation turn.

I wonder if the Rays would have him pitch the first inning and then have him play in the field for the other 8?

Not a bad debut by the kid to say the least...Had a perfect game through five, finally gave up a hit in the sixth....

He is slated to be a traditional SP with normal target of 6+ IP

His use as a batter at this point likely relegated to possible late inning LH pinch hitter for a RH batter (mostly catcher Zunino) in a high leverage men on base 1 or 2 outs, trailing in score

Great to heat, was at the beach

The future is so bright !!

Yep, the future is bright...and 18 year old Wander Franco is the number one rated prospect in MLB. He just got promoted by the Rays to High A Port Charlotte and is already tearing it up there, hitting .600, with 2 homers, and 5 RBI's in 15 at bats.....

Jake Cronenworth another legit 2way player at AAA Durham....crushing the ball as a LH bat and also legit as a RH pitcher

Rays model of having 20+ roster spots being aged 28 or younger should suffice for many years to come

Nice way to use a roster spot, if you have a player capable of it.
